PATRIOTS STOMP PRIDE WITH 19-3 WIN

August 20, 2005 - Bridgewater, NJ – The Somerset Patriots defeated the Nashua Pride 19-3 before a season high 7,832 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening. Center fielder Jeremy Owens went 3 for 5 with a home run and four RBI to lead the Patriots.
Nashua took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Right fielder Darren Bragg doubled and later scored on an RBI groundout by left fielder Kevin Haverbusch.
Somerset answered with three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Right fielder Ryan Radmanovich drew a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Owens followed with a sacrifice fly to score Radmanovich and tie up the game. First baseman Todd Betts doubled, catcher Fernando Lunar was hit by a pitch, and both runners scored on a two-run double by shortstop Patrick Boran to give Somerset a 3-1 lead.
The Patriots broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Second baseman Emiliano Escandon, third baseman Jeff Nettles, and Radmanovich drew walks to load the bases. Owens followed with an RBI single to plate Escandon. Betts then drove home two runs with a double and Lunar hit an RBI single. Boran was intentionally walked to load the bases and designated hitter George Sandel singled home a run. Escandon drew a bases loaded walk to score one more run and give Somerset a 9-1 lead.
The Pride put up two runs in the top of the fifth inning. First baseman Brian Becker drew a walk and advanced on a passed ball. Third baseman Joe Kilburg drew a walk to put two runners on base. Becker came around to score on an RBI groundout by second baseman Tom Creighton and catcher Mike Torres followed with an RBI single to cut the lead to 9-3.
Somerset scored three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, highlighted by an RBI single by Sandel and an RBI groundout by Escandon to give Somerset a 12-3 advantage.
The Patriots continued to roll with seven runs on three home runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. A two-run home run by Lunar (2), a three-run home run by Nettles (16), and a two-run home run by Owens (21) led to the 19-2 final score.
Patriots starter Shane Heams (2-3) picked up the win allowing three runs, two earned, on two hits in five innings pitched. Nashua starter Jeremy Griffiths (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing six earned runs on two hits and five walks in two innings pitched.
The 2005 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Sunday afternoon with a 1:35 pm game against the Nashua Pride. Sunday’s game includes America’s Best Frisbee Dogs presented by Hartz Mountain and Dog Guard Out Of Sight Fencing.
